DISPROVE: “The world and everything in it is unplanned accident, existence is meaningless; the past is irrelevant; nothing matters.”
Closing Statement:
The world and everything in this world are not meaningless, irrelevant, and unplanned. There are some cases that existence is meaningful but we have not been noticed or concerned by them. If the world is unplanned, there will be no point of existence. In Grendel's point of view, the world is suffering and useless due to his hardships and how people view him as a monster. In Grendel page 173, Grendel was able to feel the joy in him that he had never felt. He always felt hatred, ashamed, and embarrassed, which it caused him to experience the feeling of the joy. Through the hardships and the difficulties that he had to go through, he was able to realize that joy is not an unplanned accident, but planned accident. In addition in page 51, it showed us that "long ado said the the greatest gods made the word, every wonder-bright plain and the turning seas.." it implies that since the gods or the almighty ones had built this world, there will be purpose behind what they have created. This creation is no accident nor unplanned because the gods had created the world with reasonably reasons. Lastly in Grendel page 73 infers that past is the key to the future, which means that future is relied on the past behaviors. To sum it the arguments, in the beginning of the argument, we have argued that if the world is unplanned accident why do we need gold? This means that gold is part of our reasons for existence and also through that gold it can lead to accidents that you have planned.
1. The world is not an unplanned accident.
Grendel page 51 "He told how the earth was first built, long ago: said that the greatest of gods made the world, every wonder-bright plain and the turning seas, and set out as signs of his victory the sun and the moon, great lamps for light to land-dwellers, kingdom torches, and adorned the fields with all colors and shapes, made limbs and leaves and gave life to the every creature that moves on land."
The creation of the earth was created by God or the almighty one, which meant that God created this for a specific reason, and emphasizes that there are no "unplanned accidents". Also, how God "set out as signs of his victory the sun and the moon" represents arrangement and well-organized, which he has planned to be organized.
Grendel page 173 "Is it joy I feel?"
Grendel began to feel joyful in himself. Joy came as planned accident which he was able to experience hardships and difficulties. Through hardships and difficulties, he was able to feel difference between joy and pain.
2. The past (history) is important.
Grendel page 73 "Do something else, by all means! Alter the future! Make the world a better place in which to live! Help the poor! Feed the hungry. Be kind to idiots! What a challenge!"
Future can be changed by the past. It means that making a huge change in the past can affect the future. The future is depended on how the past has changed. Past is the key to create the future.
Reflection Letter
After I read his letter, I have suggested that the author has a different point of view than I do. Since he wrote the book,Grendel, his writing was different than how many readers viewed his book. He also contradicted himself by criticizing the students who had commented on his work for ambiguous information. In his story, John Gardner mentioned that the world is useless and full of meaninglessness, which meant that he had seen a different perspective of the world. By claiming that everything is useless and unreasonable, he contradicted himself by writing his letter to the students on how life has meaning and is reasonable. He shows that throughout his reading, he makes the readers interpret their own way of understanding the thesis of the book. While on the other hand, John Gardner did not expect the readers to understand how they created their own theories. Even though John Gardner freely opened his theories in public, many readers view that the book is controversial to what Gardner had mention in the letter. In the letter, John Gardner told the students to interpret the story in different ways, however he mentioned how he believed the story should be interpreted. This is one of the many flaws that John Gardner used when writing this letter to the students. Another flaw in his letter is the length. He is very repetitive with his ideas throughout the letter to the students. Essentially, his letter could have stated the same points for the students while only being one to one and half pages long. Likewise, his style of writing the letter was that of what he used in the book. It was not easily comprehendible and therefore, if the students had a hard time understanding his book,Grendel, they would most certainly have a hard time understanding his letter to them. John Gardner also in Beowulf stated that heros did not become heros just to become hero, but to have admiration to the people. In conclusion, even though many readers see John Gardner's style of writing as literarily complex, they continue to delve deeply into the meaning and try to discover new perspectives on the readings.
